Moving. Blah. I'm pretty excited to be back
in Long Beach. The only bummer is no dogs. I was really hoping and mentally ready to have a little friend back in my life. But alas it wasn't written in the stars...yet. My story is to be continued.

my past is haunting me
If you are new to this blog and didn't go to high school with me you didn't read my old blog. It was called open the door and I wrote in it my senior year in high school up to my first semester in college. Then I moved to this blog. I read some entries today and man I hated living in Oxnard and I loved skateboards and the boys that rode them. I kinda bummed because I had like three in high school and I deleted them all. This one survived and now you can enjoy my humble beginnings as a blogger.
Open the Door
Enjoy!

case files
Living in Lake Forest can really change your outlook on life. Life here is simple. Beautiful homes and strip malls. Once an ounce of culture is taken away, all you want it is to is get it back.
This weekend was the Foothill Ranch neighborhood garage sale. Usually, I get pretty excited about these things. But Lake Forest is a pretty young city, established in 1994, I don't think there is much "accumulated things of interest." Things of interest are in quotes, because it is all relative. The things I find interesting are old things mainly from the 50's, 60's, and 70's and it's usually dishware or accessories. So with that being said, the garage sale was a bust but it doesn't mean I didn't make out like a bandit. One house's yard looked like a 99 cent only store. I over heard that the owner knows how to work the coupon system and buys things at close to nothing and then she resells them. I found my brand of tampons for nearly half the price Target or Rite Aid sells them for. Naturally I buy two. The next house I purchased items from was an older couple. They had the most interesting stuff. I bought 5 good condition records with the most amazing covers for $1. The last house, I guess you can file this under "ask you you shall receive." I crochet beanies and I planned on buying some cute colors. I found a comforter bag full of yarn from the 70's. I paid $3! There was also a sweet Kodak 35mm camera that belongs to the sellers dad. She was asking $5. I didn't end up buying it. I usually regret these things but I have lots of cameras and I can hold out for one that truly sings to me.
All the other houses were just "blah." Nothing special. People cleaning out their old stuff to make room for their new Pottery Barn vase. I guess you can say, judging by the amount of things I bought, that it wasn't all that bad. I guess so. I really like the records, I needed tampons and I wanted new colors of yarn. But I part of me still feels empty. People laid out their possessions, offering them for all to see and buy and quite honestly it made me sad. No culture. Strip mall art prints top 40 cds. I truly live among the little boxes on the hillside.

chose your own adventure
i choose b!
bigger and better things in the future! On to the the next one I suppose!
In other adventures in suburb living, while exploring the lake forest bar scene we stumble upon the Iron Mule. You can smoke inside, they have digital shuffleboard and three pool tables. The PBRs are $3 pint (ROBBERY) and YOU CAN SMOKE INSIDE!! what???? So then I look up the laws in California regarding smoking and law states that you can be exempt from the law if you have less than 5 employees. BOOM. Here I was ready to blow the whistle on this law breaking facility, and I find the loophole. Bummer City fo sho! I mean the bar was promising. Iron Maiden writing on the door, it was next to an El Pollo Loco. It has a lot going for it, top 40 music blaring from the digital jukebox and digital shuffleboard.

questions
I have a lot of questions for my new city. I'll consult the Lake Forest FAQ!
Does the City offer a senior meals program?
Yes, the senior box lunch program is offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at 11:30 PM. Suggested donation for the box lunch program is $4, please call 461-3579 to reserve a box lunch. A hot lunch is offered to seniors for free on Thursdays at 11:30 PM. For more information please call 461-3450
lunch is one me on Thursday after 11:30pm! wait, that's not lunch time?!
Who can answer my questions about drugs and gangs?You may contact (949) 461-3545 to ask questions related to drug use and gang involvement. You may also anonymously report gang activity by calling 1-800-NO-GANGS (1-800-664-2647).

Is sleeping in a garage permitted? No. Sleeping in a garage is not permitted by the Lake Forest Municipal Code, nor are any obstructions allowed within a garage that would preclude the parking of vehicles. Note to self: report neighbors that had reclining chairs in garage. Can I keep my portable basketball hoop on the sidewalk or street?No. Privately owned sporting equipment such as basketball hoop structures, hockey nets, and skateboard ramps are not allowed in the public right-of-way. The public right-of-way includes the street, parkway, driveway apron, and sidewalk. Lake Forest = anti fun! Can I arrange for a bounce house in a Lake Forest park? Bounce houses are not allowed in City parks. Bounce houses are allowed on private properties without a permit. I don't want to live in a city that doesn't allow jolly jumpers in public parks. That is just criminal! I guess they are technically houses an need permits to be built and what not. This is after all a master planned city, a city planned against fun! |

made for walking
should have bought them. they made me taller and my calves are banging!

i went to san fransisco
my sister took the pictures.
i plan on sleeping in
when i pulled up to the shell station on holgate and 28th. with tears in my eyes, i basically told the guy who pumped my gas my life story and why i was so sad. he genuinely told me, "good luck in california."
8/12 the day i leave my best friend and my godkitty in portland. it's hard to imagine a life with out anissa. she's my sister. like my mom says, "you can't keep the twins apart." twins that were born 5 months apart and met in university 100.
i can't say it's been easy. there will be parts of the day when i'll be reminded of something that we said or did. it will get easier right? i keep on telling myself that it will. i'm having a hard enough time writing this and it's been 4 days and counting and the disney channel isn't fun to watch alone.
what does the future hold for me? have i really made the right decision? will i be ready to live in the suburbs of orange county? questions, so many questions! i have a list of wants and needs as all uncertain times do. one of the needs is a job. i don't really know my status, it's been really unclear and i'm hoping that i can work again. for the same company or something else, i don't know. a part of me just wants to start something new but i do like the comfort of having a secure job with benefits.
add all these thoughts on top of a 19 hour drive across oregon and california alone with a car full of stuff that probably won't fit in my new house. it's become draining and this is where i am now. in oxnard, missing my boyfriend and my best friend and a cat.
eventually one day i will sleep in but till that day I will stick to waking up early. It been a rough couple of days. i've been restless, sleepless and very uneasy. uncomfortable in my skin. i had everything and i feel like i have nothing.
don't worry about me, this too shall pass.
bummer city!

Treeson
I'm in love with the stories of Treeson by Hong Kong illustrator, Bubi Au Yeung. So cute:
Treeson picked up the broken hearts carefully and put them in his red cart.
於是他小心翼翼的拾起受傷的心,並放在紅車仔上。
find the whole story here here
I discovered these stories while thumbing through the book at Grasshut in Portland. I saw they had a blindbox series so naturally I bought one. I got PinB. I did my research and I found out that this character was created on April 6th,my birthday, is a sewer and a cook. So i can only think of one thing,WE WERE MEANT TO BE!
see for yourself
Through some kind of magic or fate, I got the character that I most relate to.

After working what seemed like a long day, I came home and immediately wanted french fries. So Shane and I wander to C bar, an awesome yet very underrated bar in my neighborhood. We ordered the S.E Poutine. Poutine is usually cheese curds and gravy a top french fries. S.E poutine from C Bar is collared greens with gravy and bacon a top french fries.

you don't spell it son, you eat it.
I woke up today, first thinking about how lonely it has been without Lemmy and second, I want to make a quiche with my Pyrex divided casserole dish.
When it comes to cooking or anything, I'm like my mom, I hate directions. I skim and absorb the important facts. Only when I bake do I pay attention to exact measurements as baking is like chemistry.
So I consult trusty Tastespotting for a quiche recipe. I made a few adjustments. One, I don't use frozen spinach. I had fresh on hand and added it fresh, no cooking necessary. Also, unkneesaw does not eat swine or onions, so taking full advantage of the divided dish I made one side with sausage and onion and the other with deli cut turkey sans onion.
So now, I present you with a quiche. As you will see I put in bold what was important to me.
Potato Crusted Sausage, Onion and Spinach Quiche (adapted from seriouseats.com)
Ingredients:
1 1/2 lb. Russet Potatoes
1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 small onion, finely diced
4 oz. sausage, cooked and crumbled
10 oz. box frozen spinach, cooked and roughly chopped
4 oz. cheddar cheese, grated or cubed
5 eggs
1/4 cup milk
salt and pepper
Directions:
1) Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Butter a 9 inch pie dish. Peel the potatoes and grate with a shredder. Mix the potatoes with parmesan, flour, salt and pepper. Press the potato mixture into the pie dish, pushing it along the sides. Transfer into the oven and bake for 30 minutes to dry the potatoes.
2) While the crust begins to bake, prepare the filling. In a sauté pan over medium heat, cook the onions and sausage together, until onions become translucent and sausage is cooked (about 10 minutes). Set aside. Cook the spinach according to directions on box, drain of any excess water. Cube or grate cheddar cheese.
3) Remove potato crust from the oven and reduce the oven temp. to 350 degrees. Layer spinach on bottom, then top with sausage and onion mixture. Top that with cheddar cheese.
4) In a mixing bowl, whisk eggs and milk together. Season with salt and pepper and pour over quiche. Bake for 25 minutes or until egg is set. Let sit for 10 minutes before slicing and serving (THIS IS IMPORTANT!!)
The post I took it from.
You may be asking yourself, "Is this becoming a food blog?" The answer is no.

c is for bacon cookies
I was at a party last summer when I first had a taste of the bacon cookie. The baker said that it is imperative that everyone has their own cookie recipe. Since I buy cookie dough on the regular, finding a chocolate chip cookie would be a task. It was a long search but thanks to Tastespotting I found a chocolate chip recipe that I can see myself using for the rest of my life. Found on the blog Lovin' From the Oven.
* 2 cups all-purpose flour
* 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
* 1/2 teaspoon salt
* 3/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
* 1 cup packed brown sugar
* 1/2 cup white sugar
* 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
* 1 egg
* 1 egg yolk
* 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1. Sift together the flour, baking soda and salt; set aside.
2. In a medium bowl, cream together the melted butter, brown sugar and white sugar until well blended. Beat in the vanilla, egg, and egg yolk until light and creamy. Mix in the sifted ingredients until just blended. Stir in the chocolate chips by hand using a wooden spoon.
3. Refrigerate the dough for at least an hour. When it's time, Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
4. Drop cookie dough 1/4 cup at a time onto the prepared cookie sheets. Cookies should be about 3 inches apart.
5. Bake for 15 to 17 minutes in the preheated oven, or until the edges are lightly toasted. Cool on baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
Orignal Post
I think the key is the vanilla extract. Every other recipe uses one teaspoon.
So I used this recipe and added bacon and yay! Not to worry, unkneesaw is observing a swine free diet so I reserved half on the dough for just regular cookies.

without being disrepectful
I don't know what angers me more the word brew-ha or brewski. To me, it's like the sound of nails on a chalkboard. I know that after reading this, Unkneesaw will be using the word ad nauseam. then why post such a thing you ask? I wanted to put it into the universe. Just say, "Were going to get beers." It's faster and less letters to type.

i'm glad 2009 is over. it was probably the worst year yet. someone told me that year 25 is the worst. at first i didn't believe them, but looking back i do.
i had 6 weeks of sunshine but it was taken away from me. all i have are memories. she would have loved to see snow.
hopefully 2010 will be a better year. out with the old.
